Convert PNG to WebP on your Mac.

WebP files are a fraction of the size of PNGs and load faster on every modern browser. Convert your site’s images before you upload them, without a build tool or a web service.

Or with Homebrew: brew install --cask kapyar/tap/clementine

Your files never leave your Mac unless you share them.

How it works

  1. Drag your PNG images

From Finder, the Desktop, Mail or a browser — anywhere you can drag a file.

  2. Tap ⇧, drop on WEBP

Hold Shift (⇧) while dragging and a wheel appears around your pointer. Drop on WEBP.

  3. Done

You get WebP files ready for the web. The original is never changed.

Why Clementine

Unreleased designs and client mock-ups stay on your Mac. Clementine converts them locally with its built-in encoder.

  • Keeps transparency, so logos and cut-outs still float on your page
  • Animated PNGs keep every frame and its timing
  • Typically 25–80% smaller than the PNG
  • Runs on your Mac — nothing is uploaded

WEBP Saves a copy as WEBP next to the original. The original stays as it is.

This is the wheel you’ll see. Point at other petals to see what else the file can do.

Questions

Do all browsers show WebP?

Yes — Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge all support it. Only very old software can’t open WebP.

Will I see a quality difference?

For photos and illustrations, not at normal viewing size. Pixel-art and tiny icons can stay PNG.
