Video
Convert AVI to MP4 on your Mac.
Digital-camera clips and Windows-era videos are often AVI files QuickTime can’t play. Clementine turns them into modern MP4s you can watch, edit and share.
Or with Homebrew: brew install --cask kapyar/tap/clementine
Your files never leave your Mac unless you share them.
How it works
Drag your AVI videos
From Finder, the Desktop, Mail or a browser — anywhere you can drag a file.
Tap ⇧, drop on MP4
Hold Shift (⇧) while dragging and a wheel appears around your pointer. Drop on MP4.
Done
You get modern MP4 files. The original is never changed.
Why Clementine
Family videos belong to your family. They’re converted on your Mac, never uploaded to a conversion service.
- Plays in QuickTime, Photos, iMovie and on iPhone
- Usually much smaller than the original AVI
- Batch-convert a whole folder of old clips
- Runs on your Mac — nothing is uploaded
MP4 Saves a copy as MP4 next to the original. The original stays as it is.
This is the wheel you’ll see. Point at other petals to see what else the file can do.
Questions
Why can’t QuickTime open my AVI?
AVI is a container that can hold dozens of old codecs (DivX, Xvid, MJPEG…). QuickTime supports few of them; Clementine reads them all.
Can I import the result into Photos?
Yes. MP4 with H.264 imports into Photos and iMovie like any iPhone video.
