Video
Convert MKV to MP4 on your Mac.
MKV is a popular container for films and recordings, but Apple’s apps don’t open it. Clementine re-encodes it into an MP4 that plays in QuickTime and syncs to your devices.
Or with Homebrew: brew install --cask kapyar/tap/clementine
Your files never leave your Mac unless you share them.
How it works
Drag your MKV files
From Finder, the Desktop, Mail or a browser — anywhere you can drag a file.
Tap ⇧, drop on MP4
Hold Shift (⇧) while dragging and a wheel appears around your pointer. Drop on MP4.
Done
You get MP4s for any Apple device. The original is never changed.
Why Clementine
Large video files are slow and risky to push through a website. Converting on your Mac is faster for big files and keeps your recordings private.
- H.264 video and AAC audio for maximum compatibility
- Handles big files — there’s no upload, so no size cap
- Keeps the main video and the first audio track
MP4 Saves a copy as MP4 next to the original. The original stays as it is.
This is the wheel you’ll see. Point at other petals to see what else the file can do.
Questions
What about subtitles and extra audio tracks?
The MP4 gets the main video and the first audio track. To keep every track and subtitle, convert to MKV instead or keep the original.
Will a 4K MKV stay 4K?
Yes, the resolution is kept. Re-encoding 4K takes a while; your Mac stays usable while it works.
