Video

Convert WebM to MP4 on your Mac.

Screen recordings from browser tools and clips saved from the web often come as WebM, which QuickTime and iMovie won’t open. Drop them on MP4 and they play everywhere.

Or with Homebrew: brew install --cask kapyar/tap/clementine

Your files never leave your Mac unless you share them.

How it works

  1. Drag your WebM videos

From Finder, the Desktop, Mail or a browser — anywhere you can drag a file.

  2. Tap ⇧, drop on MP4

Hold Shift (⇧) while dragging and a wheel appears around your pointer. Drop on MP4.

  3. Done

You get MP4 videos that QuickTime opens. The original is never changed.

Why Clementine

Screen recordings capture whatever was on your screen. Clementine converts them on your Mac — there’s no upload limit, no watermark and no copy kept anywhere.

  • H.264 video and AAC sound — the most compatible MP4 there is
  • Quality-based encoding (CRF 20), so the picture stays sharp
  • Fast start: the MP4 begins playing before it’s fully downloaded
  • Runs on your Mac — nothing is uploaded

MP4 Saves a copy as MP4 next to the original. The original stays as it is.

This is the wheel you’ll see. Point at other petals to see what else the file can do.

Questions

Why won’t my Mac play WebM?

QuickTime and Photos don’t support the VP8/VP9 video inside WebM. MP4 with H.264 plays on every Apple device.

How long does it take?

WebM has to be re-encoded, so a few minutes of HD video takes about as long as the clip itself on a recent Mac.

Is the sound kept?

Yes, the first audio track is converted to AAC.
