Convert BMP to JPG on your Mac.
BMP files are uncompressed — a single screenshot can be 10 MB. Converting to JPG keeps the picture and drops the bulk, so the files fit in mail and cloud storage again.
Or with Homebrew: brew install --cask kapyar/tap/clementine
Your files never leave your Mac unless you share them.
How it works
Drag your BMP files
From Finder, the Desktop, Mail or a browser — anywhere you can drag a file.
Tap ⇧, drop on JPG
Hold Shift (⇧) while dragging and a wheel appears around your pointer. Drop on JPG.
Done
You get small JPGs, originals kept. The original is never changed.
Why Clementine
Old scans and archives can hold anything. Clementine converts them on your Mac, so nothing from your archive is uploaded.
- Often 10–20× smaller than the BMP
- Convert a whole archive folder at once
- Names stay the same, only the extension changes
- Runs on your Mac — nothing is uploaded
JPG Saves a copy as JPG next to the original. The original stays as it is.
This is the wheel you’ll see. Point at other petals to see what else the file can do.
Questions
Will I lose quality?
JPG is lossy, but at Clementine’s high-quality setting the difference isn’t visible in photos. For pixel graphics with few colours, choose PNG instead — it’s lossless and still far smaller than BMP.
Where do BMP files come from?
Mostly Windows Paint, older scanners, games and industrial software. macOS opens them but few web services accept them.
