Convert M4A to MP3 on your Mac.

Voice Memos, GarageBand exports and many downloads are M4A. When a podcast host, car stereo or website wants MP3, drop the files on MP3.

Or with Homebrew: brew install --cask kapyar/tap/clementine

Your files never leave your Mac unless you share them.

How it works

  1. Drag your M4A files

From Finder, the Desktop, Mail or a browser — anywhere you can drag a file.

  2. Tap ⇧, drop on MP3

Hold Shift (⇧) while dragging and a wheel appears around your pointer. Drop on MP3.

  3. Done

You get MP3s with their tags. The original is never changed.

Why Clementine

Voice memos are often private — meetings, lectures, notes to self. Clementine converts them on your Mac and nowhere else.

  • High-quality variable bitrate MP3 (LAME V2, about 190 kbps)
  • Title, artist and cover art come along
  • Convert a whole album or a month of voice memos at once
  • Runs on your Mac — nothing is uploaded

MP3 Saves a copy as MP3 next to the original. The original stays as it is.

This is the wheel you’ll see. Point at other petals to see what else the file can do.

Questions

Where are my Voice Memos files?

Drag recordings straight out of the Voice Memos app onto the wheel, or find them in Finder after sharing them to Files.

Will MP3 sound worse than M4A?

At this quality most people can’t hear a difference. Converting from one lossy format to another always loses a little, so keep the original if you can.

Can it transcribe the memo too?

Yes — Transcribe on the ⌘ wheel turns speech into text, also on your Mac.
